Sister & Brother in Captivity, directed by the award-winning filmmaker Yoram Zak, is an eye-opening episode from Israel’s leading investigative and current affairs program, produced by Keshet Media Group. This gripping documentary tells the true story of Maya and Itay Regev, siblings from Herzilya, who were kidnapped during the Nova Music Festival on October 7 by Hamas-led Palestinian terrorists in a brutal assault across southern Israel. The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 hostages, with nearly 400 individuals killed at the festival alone.
In preparation for this significant episode, Zak engaged the Regev siblings in conversation about their traumatic experiences during captivity. His film crew also documented the emotional journey of their parents, Mirit and Ilan Regev, beginning from the 10th day of their children’s abduction until the family was finally reunited.
The documentary captures the shared experiences of Maya and Itay, who were taken alongside friends Omer Shem-Tov, still in captivity, and Ori Danino, whose tragic death was confirmed after his body was recovered from a Hamas tunnel. The episode dives deep into the emotional turmoil of their ordeal, including the siblings' innovative ways to communicate during their separation and their efforts to maintain hope and faith in the face of adversity.
Maya and Itay’s journey is one of resilience, marked by Maya's struggle with a leg injury and her memories of a fellow hostage who died beside her. This poignant narrative is amplified by the siblings’ reflections on their lives leading up to the attacks, sharing memories from their recent family vacation in Mexico and their return to Israel just before the festival.
The episode culminates in the siblings' release as part of a weeklong truce in late November, raising vital awareness about the ongoing plight of hostages and the impact of such violence on families and communities. With heartfelt insights from Maya about her rehabilitation journey, including multiple surgeries and the emotional toll of public recognition, this documentary serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit amid unimaginable hardships.
Join Maya and Itay in their journey as they advocate for their fellow hostages and share the painful realities that many continue to face long after the cameras stop rolling.
