When you marry someone, you marry their entire family. Israel's longest running sitcom is finally coming to IZZY. Shani and Shai, married with children, attend family dinners every weekend at their respective parents’ homes: Friday with her parents and Saturday with his. Every episode begins in the family car, on the ride over to Shani’s folks’ place, and ends with the drive back home from Shai’s the following day. In between they’re immersed in their extended families and are obliged to deal with all their various quirks. The show’s all about how ritual family dinners operate on “autopilot”– you attend them whether you want to or not, you meet the same people, eat the same food, and mostly just try to survive the familial minefield. The show also shines a light on a melting pot of cultures - Shani’s parents are Sephardic (Middle Eastern) Jews, Shai’s parents are European Ashkenazis - emphasising the different mentalities of the two households and the ways in which Shai and Shani are forced to navigate not only their in-laws, but their cultural nuances as well.
